Derek Carr is returning to football life in California.
Carr, the former Oakland and Las Vegas Raiders quarterback and a four-time Pro Bowler, is joining the UCLA football team’s coaching staff in a volunteer role as a special advisor.
The news, announced Monday, marks a big win for the Bruins, as having a coach with 11 NFL seasons under his belt will provide a ton of of experience and wisdom for the roster. A four-time Pro Bowler, the 35-year-old Carr last played in the NFL in 2024.

Carr celebrated his new gig by taking his wife, Heather, and their five children to the Los Angeles Dodgers’ game against the Kansas City Royals on Monday night. Carr interacted with UCLA alum and Dodgers manager Dave Roberts while there, which Carr then addressed on social media.
“Shoutout to Dave Roberts. We are at a @Dodgers game and he noticed my wife holding our newborn and kids in the heat during batting practice and invited us into his office to cool off for 30 minutes. A genuinely kind person. Thanks Dave. Go Dodgers,” Carr wrote.

Roberts is regarded as one of the friendliest and most accommodating managers in baseball. The post has now gone viral, amassing over 440,000 views in about 16 hours.

Carr’s “special advisor” role will reportedly entail assisting the Bruins’ offensive staff with game-planning strategy, while also working with UCLA’s quarterbacks. The Bruins’ starting QB will be Nico Iamaleava, who threw for 1,928 yards and 13 touchdowns last season.
While Carr has accepted this role as a volunteer, it’s safe to say he doesn’t need the money. He made over $205 million across his NFL career with the Raiders and the New Orleans Saints.
