Laura Wright isn’t going anywhere on General Hospital.
The actress has played Carly Spencer on the ABC soap since 2005, and she just gave fans a pretty definitive answer about her future in Port Charles: She signed a new contract.
“I’m not going anywhere ❤️❤️ just signed a new contract !!! ✨✨” Wright posted on X, formerly Twitter, confirming that she’ll be sticking around as Carly.
The news came after a fan shared a photo of Wright with Maurice Benard, who plays Sonny Corinthos. “Two amazing actors beautiful #laurawright and #mauricebenard,” @Carlyandava1 wrote.
Another fan, @WorcesterGrl82, followed up with a message that made it clear just how much Carly means to her.
“Can I just say if you ever leave General Hospital as Carly I will stop watching the show. I honestly have loved you and think that you are the best person to play Carly.”
Luckily, that’s not something she has to worry about — at least for now. Wright reassured her that she isn’t leaving General Hospital.
And fans were quick to celebrate. “Awesome. It’s so fun getting to see the full life of a character. Hope you stick around for many more years. I think Carly will be a hoot in her Tracy Quartermaine era❤️,” @mtworkslady wrote.
Wright has been a familiar face in daytime television for decades. She first joined Loving as Ally Rescott before moving over to its spinoff, The City. After that series ended, she landed on Guiding Light as Cassie Layne, the long-lost half-sister of Reva Shayne Lewis (Kim Zimmer).
She stayed with Guiding Light until 2005, when she made the cross-country move to General Hospital and took over the role of Carly. More than 20 years later, she’s still there.
And Carly has certainly kept Wright busy.
The character is a fiercely protective mother, a longtime friend to Jason Morgan (Steve Burton), and the on-again, off-again wife of Sonny. Carly and Sonny have spent plenty of time at odds, but when their family is in trouble, they usually manage to find their way back to each other.
Wright has also had some especially emotional material over the years, including Carly’s involvement in the storyline surrounding Sonny’s father, Mike (Max Gail), and his battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Carly and Jason have had their share of twists, too. The longtime friends eventually made it to the altar after they believed Sonny was dead. He wasn’t, of course. Sonny was actually living in Nixon Falls with amnesia, while Nina (Cynthia Watros) was the only person who knew he was still alive.
Wright’s performance as Carly earned her the Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series in 2011.
Now, with a new contract signed, Carly’s story in Port Charles is far from over.
