We’ve opened up this week’s Politics Report for everyone because there is a lot.
First: SB 958. The Midway Rising project provoked this bill in Sacramento that would exclude the impacts of the actual height of a proposed construction project from environmental impact considerations.
We wanted to ask the City Council candidates for the district around Midway to weigh in. We forgot to note in the piece that we only ended up connecting with one of the candidates, Nicole Crosby, who actually said more interesting things about whether the project would provide promised affordable housing.
The Midway Rising team provided a letter and assurances the promised affordable housing would come or they wouldn’t be able to build other things.
Second: We explained what lunar cycles have to do with SB 958.

San Diego’s State Lawmakers Report Card
How are San Diego’s state lawmakers performing so far? One data set offers some clues.
Sacramento reporter Nadia Lathan looked at how many bills each member introduced, passed and which ones they voted for or against. And with re-election races just around the corner, she also looked at how much some legislators have raised.
Assemblymember Chris Ward is leading the pack with more bills passed, Lathan writes. Some of San Diego’s lawmakers are playing it safe by choosing not to vote at all on certain bills, one legislator has done this 400 times. Others are voting “aye” a lot.

UC San Diego Cuts Ties with Border Patrol
Earlier this year, our partners at CalMatters revealed that UC San Diego was one of dozens of law enforcement agencies in the state that collaborate with Border Patrol.
The university participated in a grant program and used the money to patrol sections of the coastline near the school, CalMatters reported. Now, after student backlash, it appears the school has cut ties with the program and does not plan to reapply.
CalMatters’ Phoebe Huss writes that a spokesperson with the university declined to say if the school left the grant program, but she got her hands on emails that show the school plans to stop using the funds.

Found in the Scroll: Man’s Best Bodyguard
Two men engaged in a nasty brawl at a park in Mission Beach were suddenly forced to stop after their dogs also started going at it. In a recording of the altercation, one man is seen grabbing one of the dogs in an attempt to separate them, but the other guy takes another shot at him before putting one of the dogs in a body lock.
“Oh Damn. Good lord,” says the person recording the now viral video.
We don’t know why the men were fighting. Maybe they were upset about all the closed bathrooms?
