CLEVELAND — Luis Robert Jr. had a good idea heading into Monday’s trade deadline that his Mets tenure would continue.
The veteran outfielder heard from his representatives last week that he should prepare for a possible trade, but if his final stretch of games before the deadline was any kind of showcase, Robert’s performance screamed that teams should avoid him.
“After the week I had at home, I knew it would be difficult to make a trade there,” Robert said through an interpreter before the Mets faced the Guardians on Wednesday. “Obviously there is always a possibility, but I thought it would be difficult to pull off a trade at that point.”
It was a homestand in which Robert — who returned July 20 from an extended stay on the injured list — went 5-for-27 (.185) and saw his disappointing OPS drop from .642 to .610.
